THE INVISIBLE CHILDREN OF THIS WORLD

INVISIBLE CHILDREN

The LRA In Africa are abducting and killing the children and families.  Many of the children abducted by the LRA, are forced to turned on their own families, neighbors and friends.  Suporting these children will save them from the slander of their land, their homes, their families.

A history of Africa’s longest-running armed conflict

In 1986, Yoweri Museveni gained the presidency of Uganda. Alice Lakwena, a woman from the Acholi tribe in northern Uganda started the Holy Spirit Movement (HSM) in opposition. The group recruited followers and forged alliances with rebel militias with the intent of entering Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, and freeing the north from government oppression. The Holy Spirit Movement had regional support, but regional support only. When Alice Lakwena was exiled, there was no obvious person to take over leadership of the Holy Spirit Movement.

Joseph Kony

Joseph Kony claimed to be a distant cousin of Alice Lakwena’s and the natural successor to lead the Holy Spirit Movement. Soon after Joseph Kony assumed management of the group, he changed the name to the Lord’s Resistance Army, or LRA. Joseph Kony wasn’t able to maintain the group’s numbers or regional support, so he started stealing food and abducting children to fill the ranks of his army. Subsequently, he lost any remaining regional support. What had started out as a rebel movement to end the oppression of the north became an oppression of the north in itself.

Joseph Kony’s tactics were—and remain—brutal. He often forced children to kill their parents or siblings with machetes or blunt tools. He abducted girls to be sex slaves for his officers. He brainwashed and indoctrinated the children with his lies and manipulated them with his claim of spiritual powers.

At the height of the conflict in Uganda, children “night commuted.” That is, every evening they would walk miles from their homes to the city centers. There, hundreds of children would sleep in school houses, churches, or bus depots to avoid abduction by the LRA.

Kony and the LRA abducted more than 30,000 children in northern Uganda.

Women 4 Women

This is such a great organization. EK has been involved for the past 15 years and has been blessed to be able to sponsor 2 women at a time and we have taken those blessings and pass them on. You will love learning and conversing with these women in other countries. Each "sister" is on the program for a year with you as they learn new skills. Since 2005, Kate Spade New York and Women for Women International have been working together to promote micro-enterprises for Women in the still-recovering communities throughout Bosnia & Herzegovina. As more women become involved, more change will come. Here is a statement from them:

Our sponsorship program supports women survivors of war and conflicts as they progress through a one-year program that helps them rebuild their lives.

Your sponsorship funds are used to help women receive job-skills training, business and money management basics and rights awareness education.

A woman cannot be enrolled in the WfWI program until she has a sponsor; so a sponsor's influence on her life could not be more important.

This Is A Tried And True Program.  Visit This Site And Sign Up For Your A Sister Of Your Own.  Then Write Letters (Paper Or Email) And Receive Letters And Pictures From Your Sister.  This Relationship And Knowledge Is A Treasure.  Knowing You Have Saved This Woman, Your Sister And Taught Her Skills For A LifeTime Is Beyond Words.

AmericanTown's Heroes: Skyler Lee Collects Coats to Keep Neighbors Warm

COLLECTING WARM WINTER COATS

Skyler Lee is not your typical 12-year-old. She has a more highly developed sense of duty and the endless energy to make a difference. Since 2008 when she heard about children who didn't have winter coats she has been working hard to make sure those who are needy have coats, hats and scarves to keep them warm.

In the past four years she has worked year round to collect and clean coats that are then distributed by the Salvation Army.

THE HEIFER ORGANIZATION

Our Mission

Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the Earth.

It all started with a cow.

Moved by the plight of orphans and refugees of the Spanish Civil War as he ladled out meager rations of powdered milk, Dan West, an Indiana farmer, volunteer relief worker and Church of the Brethren member, grasped that the people needed "a cow, not a cup"—cows that could produce milk so families would not have to depend on temporary aid. From that simple idea, Heifer International was born.

In 1944, the first cows sent abroad were donated by West's neighbors and distributed throughout Europe following World War II. More than 67 years later, Heifer has expanded its mission, just as it expanded to 30 types of animals it now provides—from goats, geese and guinea pigs to bees, silkworms and water buffalo.

West's vision of a worldwide program to end hunger and poverty was born of his Christian faith, and today, Heifer works with people of all beliefs—and no belief—to overcome poverty and hunger. We ask no faith statement from partners or participants and almost all staff in the countries where we have programs are indigenous to that country. Their religious beliefs vary widely, but they share Heifer's singular commitment—to help poor and hungry people help themselves.

By giving families a hand-up, not just a handout, we empower them to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity, but our approach is more than that. By bringing communities together and linking them with markets in their area, we help bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty.

Our animals don't just provide project partners with a reliable source of food, but also a reliable source of income. Extra agricultural products, such as milk from cows or goats, honey from bees or eggs from chickens, can be both shared within the community and sold at market. This new income, coupled with the training in sustainable practices that our partners receive, allows partners to clothe their families, provide them with medical care and send their children to school.

And when not just one but many families gain this new sustainable produce and income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural co-ops, and forming community savings and loan groups to help fund entrepreneurial start-ups. Newly formed women's groups help increase the communities' full potential, as neighbors who may have never interacted now come together to help the community prosper.

It's a lofty goal, but it's happening! In communities around the world, our 12 Cornerstones model is helping people lift themselves from hunger and poverty.
